NAZARETH, Pa. -

Police made a visit to several kids’ homes Saturday morning — and the kids loved every minute of it! It was the sixth annual “Shop with a Cop” event, where children get to shop for Christmas presents with an officer from the Colonial Regional Police. Donations made all the gift purchases possible.

He’s making a list and checking it twice, but “he” is not Santa. This is nine year-old Zach from Bath, Northampton County.

“I asked half of my family what they wanted, and they said it, so I put it on a list,” he said.

Zach is one a handful of lucky kids who got to “Shop with a Cop” Saturday morning.

“The officers pick the children up in the police cars,” said Chief Roy Seiple. “We put the lights on and the sirens on.”

Then the kids shop — for themselves and for their families.

“Each child got, I believe, 450 dollars,” said Sgt. Mike Enstrom.

The money was donated by police, local businesses, and everyday citizens.

The kids each got 450 dollars; fifty bucks goes toward a toy for the Marines’ Toys for Tots program, which gives to those in need. Many of these kids come from similar backgrounds.

“This is probably something that these people would not be able to do had it not been for these donations,” said Seiple.

Enstrom added: “It was a lot of fun, watching the kids with the smile of their face.”

Walmart donated the free wrapping and some shopping helpers; Red Robin provided the free lunch. This whole day provided a different view of the police than these kids may be used to.

“Nine times out of ten, when you come in contact with us, it’s because something

bad happened,” said Seiple. “Today is something good.”

And for a good day, seven year-old Lucas has a simple reply.

“Thank you!”

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers is a casual restaurant chain (the Tilghman Square location is one of about 450 across the United States and Canada) that prides itself on made-to-order burgers, fresh ingredients, Bottomless Steak Fries and employees who will take extra steps to ensure that customers are satisfied.

Gourmet burgers start with fresh beef and are built into tall creations with additional ingredients that define thematic flavors. The Whisky River BBQ Burger gets its identity from signature Whisky River BBQ Sauce drizzled over a burger dressed with onion straws, cheddar cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. The Banzai Burger hints at its Hawaiian roots with grilled pineapple and teriyaki marinade. The Royal Red Robin Burger, in addition to bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato, is topped with a fried egg. Non-beef vegetarian and vegan burger patties are also available, and guests can ask for a custom mix of ingredients to build their personal perfect burger.

It’s not ALL burgers at Red Robin, though. There are numerous combinations of chicken sandwiches, wraps, entrees and entrée salads such as Southwest grilled chilled salad and apple harvest chicken salad. All burgers and sandwiches are served with Red Robin’s Bottomless Steak Fries, meaning free refills. It’s probably not as widely known, but customers who do not wish to have fries may substitute a number of other sides, including a side salad, steamed broccoli or carrots, coleslaw or melon.

Shareable appetizers include standard fare of wings, dips and quesadillas as well as the visually outstanding Towering Onion Rings. Thirteen breaded and fried onion rings in graduated diameters come to the table on a vertical rod, looking like a giant edible version of the classic baby toy of stacking rings.

Free refills are offered on many of the beverages. Alcoholic drinks tend to be large showpieces of fruity mixtures in specialty glasses.

The Red Robin gourmet hamburger restaurant on Route 248 in Lower Nazareth Township is scheduled to complete facility upgrades in mid-November, owners said on Tuesday.

That means interior and exterior enhancements to the restaurant that opened in 1995, the second Red Robin for the Lehigh Valley.

Menu prices for the Lower Nazareth restaurant will roll back to 1995. The price rollback of 19 menu items will run Nov. 28 to Dec. 11, and include selections like $7.29 bacon cheeseburgers, $3.95 Absolute Lemonade drinks, $3.99 fried zucchini and $7.29 crispy chicken sandwiches.

The Lower Nazareth restaurant is owned by Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group, the Lower Macungie-based group that owns nearly 20 Red Robin restaurants, including all five in the Valley.

The group held a similar price rollback after last year’s renovation of the Red Robin in Tilghman Square Shopping Center in South Whitehall.

The restaurant group also recently opened a Red Robin next to Cabela’s outside Hamburg.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs have unveiled big plans for 2012

The Red Robin Tiki Terrace and Oasis

Red and The Red Robin Tiki Terrace & Red Robin Oasis Construction Plans

General Manager Kurt Landes donning a grass skirt under his suit and complementary lei began the festivities by introducing the increased partnership with Red Robin on the new construction at CCP. Mike Axiotis, Vice President of Operations for the Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group was on hand and spoke of his pleasure with the new Red Robin Tiki Terrace and Oasis. Construction is expected to be completed in January and has already begun with some concrete saw-cutting and removal.

Mr. Landes was keen to point out the overhanging seating where the first row actually is in the field of play – a concept not commonly found in any ball park. To me, this is a perfect addition to Coca-Cola Park and kudos to the IronPigs for making it so. The Tiki Terrace & Oasis has something for everyone from larger hospitality groups to smaller groups right down to the individual ticket holder including some things never before seen at Coca-Cola Park all under a thatched roof!

There will be both bar and food service available at the Tiki Terrace and Oasis. IronPig’s head chef Jan Giejda revealed he has some tropical based recipes in his cook book for the Tiki Terrace. Jan also mentioned he has finished up most of the hospitality menu and will be commencing work on the other menus shortly. We fans certainly have some great new food selections for 2012 to look forward to from Jan and his staff’s talented hands.

The following seating options are available from the new Tiki Terrace and Oasis:

Large groups:
The Tiki Terrace is $37/person for groups consisting of 48-64. This will offer full bar service and a unique tropical themed menu in addition to regular ballpark fair.

Smaller groups:
The Oasis will offer a 4 seat table for $60 and is initially being offered only in nine game mini plans. This area will feature wait service and share some of the tropical menu in addition to regular ballpark fair.

All ticket holders:
The Oasis will also feature a 300 sq foot bar and 5,000 sq feet of covered tables and drink stands open to all other ticket holders. The bar will also include specialty frozen drinks.

You’ve all heard about how good Red Robin’s “gourmet burgers” are (heck – it’s even in their name). And I’m sure some of you have been a little skeptical (Gourmet? Really?), but have no fear – their burgers really are awesome.

With 12 different options like the Sauteed ‘Shroom Burger, the Pot Roast Burger, and the Chili Chili Cheeseburger, who wouldn’t be tempted to indulge? Their best-selling one (according to our waitress) is the one that started it all – the Red Robin Gourmet Cheeseburger, where you choose your own cheese. And the best part is that all of the burgers come with the restaurant’s signature “Bottomless Steak Fries” (meaning you never have to stop eating their specially-seasoned thick-cut fries).

If you’re not a beef lover, however, there are plenty of other classic American options on the menu. There’s a nice selection of sandwiches (like the Whiskey River BBQ Chicken and the Garden Burger), entrées (like Arctic Cod Fish & Chips and Chicken Parmigiano Pasta), salads (like the Southwest Grilled Chicken and the Avo-Cobb-O), and soups (like the yummy Baked Potato).

And if you’re hungry, try the Towering Onion Rings appetizer. It’s quite the architectural treat, with 13 rings and Campfire Sauce and Ranch for dipping.

My meal: Artichoke and Spinach Dip and a Bleu Ribbon Burger (steak sauce, bleu cheese, onion straws, and chipotle mayo). The burger was so good, I was sad when it was over. And our waitress was lovely, so I have to go with a 5/5.

Details:
4688 Broadway (in the Tilghman Square shopping center), Allentown
(610) 366-1776
Open every day, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (until 12 a.m. Friday and Saturday)

Price range: $ ½ (the average entrée is about $10)
